This is my new FAVORITE children's story!!!! It is about a little girl named Brigid who declares, "Mommy I need those coloring markers!"
This story captures in exaggerated form:
- modern marketing to our children (Brigid explains - "Mommy there are these NEW coloring markers. They are the best kind. Mommy, all my friends have them. Mom - I NEED those new coloring markers.)
- modern parents indulgences (Brigid's mother obligingly buys her daughter 500 coloring markers)
- modern parents tendency toward extreme declarations about their children (Brigid's mother declares "Wow! My kid is an artist!" and later, "Brigid! You've wrecked your life!")
- modern parent/child relationship - the child is able to bargain with the parent, the parent sets no boundaries. (I don't want to give away too much here.)
- how young children reason and how sometimes we un-intentionally send them mixed messages. (Brigid explains to herself, "Even my mother colors her fingernails.")

This book is the best! I enjoy Munsch's sense of diction and rhythm and his witty satire of parents and kids. Emma and I enjoy it together so much! It is my favorite book to read out loud. We get into the drama of Brigid and her mother's escapades with 1500 coloring markers.

Other series I enjoy:
Berenstein Bears by Stan and Jan Berenstein
Just (Me and My Dad; Me and My Mom...etc.) ...by Mercer Mayer

How 'bout you? What stories did you love as a kid, or do you love as a parent?

We love the book Hush Little Baby by Sylvia Long. She changed the words to the traditional song and I love it! Instead of "Mama's gonna buy you a..." she changed the words to "Mama's gonna show you a..." and each thing Mama shows her baby is something from nature or something to share that doesn't cost anything. The best things in life aren't things we can buy anyway. Right? I highly recommend it. I read/sing it to Tori nearly every night before bedtime.
I loved Mercer Mayer books. I also loved the Berenstein Bears books too. I can't really remember any childrens books. When I was in first grade I got the book The BFG from my teacher and that was the first 'real' book I ever read and has always been one of my favorite books.
